Why Head & Heart Soap began

Head & Heart Soap began out of curiosity and a desire to better understand the products we were using every day.

Spending time reading ingredient labels led to a deeper interest in cosmetic formulation, ingredient sourcing, and how products are created. Learning about cosmetic labeling regulations — including the use of INCI names — helped build an appreciation for both transparency and safety in personal care products.

From there, the goal became simple: to create products using ingredients we personally enjoy working with, including essential oils, thoughtfully selected oils and butters, and natural colorants where appropriate. What began as products made for personal use and shared with friends and family gradually grew into something others wanted to enjoy as well.

Where the name “Head & Heart” comes from

When we decided to make this an official business, we wanted a name that felt personal without using our names.

During a week in Kimberley, BC, I spent hours trying to come up with the right name — clever, descriptive, anything that would stick — and nothing felt quite right. We finally took a break, went for a walk, and talked about what we were building.

That conversation made something obvious: we bring different strengths to the work, and they balance each other. I’m the heart — creative, hands-on, and passionate about making and formulating. My husband is the head — practical, steady, and focused on the business side. The name Head & Heart came from that simple truth.

Sometimes the best names arrive when you stop chasing them.
